No Samsung Galaxy S3 or S4 phone is complete without the smartwatch made specifically for it. The Galaxy Gear is both smart and stylish with six available colors, a customizable face and a whole lot of built-in functionality. The display is a surprisingly clear 1.63-inch touch screen with Super AMOLED, 320 x 320 resolution. What makes the display work is the same low-power AMOLED technology already used in mobile devices to help save battery life. The Super part of the name refers to Samsung’s innovation of integrating touchscreen technology that was first used with the Galaxy III.
Personal security is a big issue with us, and the Gear smartwatch speaks to our anxiety. Most people know it can be a good idea lock your phone while you’re away, but entering PIN codes or thumbprint to just check your text messages can be inconvenient. When paired, the Samsung Galaxy smartphone and Gear smartwatch work together to secure your phone. An Auto Lock feature detects when you’ve moved more than 5 feet away from your Galaxy and secures your phone. The phone returns to its unlocked state when you return.
A built-in Find My Device feature adds another level of convenience in case your phone is not there when you get back. If you misplace your phone, you won’t be ripping apart your home just to find it. You don’t have to use an online location feature or beg a friend to call, just push a button on the smartwatch, and it sends a signal to your phone instructing it to make an audible location tone.
Of course, these and other features don’t really present themselves until you partner the watch with your Samsung Galaxy phone. With a Bluetooth connection, the S Voice feature allows you to make simple commands, place calls, dictate messages or set reminders. A Gear Manager app for the Galaxy S3 or S4 phone even lets you customize the watch display.
The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch runs on an 800MHz single-core processor that mostly functions to operate the Bluetooth-tethered, low-power Super AMOLED smart display. Samsung indicates that the battery should last 2 to 3 days. Your results may vary depending on how much you play with it, but its low power demands mean the battery should last awhile.
The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch is only compatible with Galaxy S3 and S4 phones, but with those phones, its face becomes fully customizable. The smartwatch is available in six colors and comes loaded with features that make your already great phone even greater.
