Are you the kind of person who likes ultra-customized electronics? Does your phone define you? If so, check out Pebble – a smartwatch wrist phone that's designed with user customizations in mind – and compare it to the best watch phones. You can download a number of beautiful watch face styles, from quirky digital displays to classic analog formats and even text readouts of the time. But customization doesn't stop there.
Of course, Pebble performs all the standard Bluetooth watch functions, such as incoming caller ID, email and text message notifications, calendar alerts, social media notifications and weather alerts. All of these notifications are brought to your attention by a silent vibration, which also functions as an alert for your phone's alarm and timer. You can shake your wrist to dismiss a notification, or just press a button. Because the watch face doesn't have touchscreen functionality, you navigate the interface via four buttons on the sides of the watch phone's body.
Available in white, black or red (with a black band), Pebble works with iPhone 3GS and newer and Android phones running OS 2.3 and newer, although only iPhone 4, 4S and 5 have full features. Unfortunately, Pebble does not work with Blackberry, Windows or Palm phones.
Pebble charges via USB, and the battery can last up to seven days, thanks to an e-paper display that uses less battery than an LED screen. Of course, this wrist phone does have a
backlight for use in the dark as well. It is waterproof up to 130 feet, though diving and hot water exposure aren't recommended. It also features a scratch- and shatter-resistant lens with an anti-glare optical coating, so it's made to take a bit of a beating. If the band doesn't suit you, any other 22 mm band should fit.
This watch phone is a bit on the larger side, though it's far from bulky on your wrist. Perhaps the biggest drawback to the Pebble smartwatch is that it lacks a built-in microphone and speaker, so you can't take or make calls on the Bluetooth watch itself. It doesn't play music either; it merely allows you to control your phone's music playback from your wrist, which may only be convenient if you have a long headphone cord or Bluetooth headphones.
